Also, on 13 May there was a post about new carparking on The Esplanade (https://omokoroa.net/blog/community-post/take-paradise-and-put-up-a-parking-lot/). Since we are very frequent users of the green areas on The Esplanade, I actually did go back to WBOPDC to ask about that and I got a useful reply, copied below. Feel free to post or summarise anything from that reply if you think it will be of benefit for people. I do recall WBOPDC consulting on the concept plan so I don’t think the reference to a “dictatorship” is entirely fair. Here is a link to the relevant WBOPDC webpage, including the concept plan and a summary of the process: https://www.westernbay.govt.nz/council/projects/omokoroa-domain-and-esplanade. I suggested to WBOPDC that they may want to consider using some sort of pervious paving instead of solid concrete for the new carparks so they retain some greenery while addressing the parking and dust issues described below. Haven’t heard back yet.

Reply from WBOPDC:
As set out in the Omokoroa Domain and Esplanade concept plan Council will be adding an additional eight bay parking section and footpathto the green space on The Esplanade (Item 26 in the concept plan). This was agreed by Council following a development process, in 2018 and 2019, which included extensive community engagement via community open days, online surveys and a workshop with key stakeholders. More information on the Omokoroa Domain and Esplanade concept plan decision story can be found here. The exact location is yet to be confirmed but Council is investigating a preliminary option of between Harbour View Road and the large pohutukawa tree, heading towards the Omokoroa Boat Club, which enables a green space around the tree. Council will publish a concept plan to illustrate how the design will ensure that the parking bays are deep enough for utility vehicles with bike racks as these are becoming more regular thanks to initiatives such as the Omokoroa to Tauranga Cycleway. Once finalised this concept plan will be published within the Omokoroa Domain and Esplanade project page on Council’s website.
Why are these car parks needed? As Omokoroa and the region continues to grow, so does the demand for carparking at the Esplanade in Omokoroa. Over the summer time vehicles park on the grassed area along the Esplanade and with the resulting wear and tear the area turns to dust. This dust creates a nuisance to the property owners across the road and has resulted in a number of complaints to Council. It is important to note that only a small part of the dust was due to the stormwater contract, the rest was due to high public use and the drought. To remediate the resulting wear and tear of the grassed area Council will re-soil and grass seed the affected area in the coming months. Please note this area will be fenced off to prevent parking to ensure the grass regrows. This area will be reopened prior to summer, when demand for beachside parking is critical. The additional eight bay parking section and footpath will formalise the carparking along this section of the Esplanade and remove the dust nuisance issue. Whether the area is in grass or formed carparks there will still be cars parking along the edge of the road.
